Respecting those who have gone before us and what they have done is very important when dealing with the built environment. In many cases, buildings have been used and re-used for decades. We can learn from successes and from failures. We can experience space within and between buildings first-hand. We can witness the value of certain materials and study the habits of the occupants. History does teach us a great deal. Respect of history is essential.
When designing for a client with a historical building, several factors must be addressed: social and economic values, interior use of the building, ADA regulations, building codes, material use and maintenance, and many more. We offer design services ranging from historical consulting to full blown A/E services for buildings such as the University of South Dakota's Old Main in Vermillion, South Dakota.
